Rolin Manthe, alternately called Mr Bad Mojo and Big Mon by the DV-8s, was born in 1760 in Pétionville Haiti, (Near Port-au-Prince). His father was a rich land owner and his mother was a house slave. Rolin’s early life was the same as nearly every other slave working on a sugar plantation. However at the age of 33, that all changed. His master was losing a lot of cattle to an unusual wasting sickness and Rolin was sent out to guard the herd at night. On his second night of guarding, he heard the snap of a twig behind him, and he whirled around, too late. He never saw what happened, he knew only that he woke up some time later in a close confined space smelling of damp and mildew. After only a few moments he realized that he was buried in a coffin! He kicked and screamed and then much to his surprise, he pushed his way out of the earth. A overgrown stone, nearby was scrawled with his name. Also nearby were to stones of his mother, his sister and his brothers. He climbed the hill to the mansion from the cemetery and found that it was a burned ruin. Even in the deepest dark of this night, he was amazed at how clearly he could see. He walked that night, down the hills and into the city of Port-au-Prince, farther than ever he had been from his home before. He was amazed at the freedom of the other blacks that he saw and learned later that five years ago, the city was freed from Spanish rule during the revolution in 1802. The year was 1807 and apparently he had been in a grave for 14 years. Suddenly he found he was starving, and though he ate as much as he could beg for, the food would not settle in his stomach and he lost it all in sickness.
As he retched, he heard a woman speaking nearby. The woman told him that food was not to be his anymore, and that she would teach him what he must know. For Rolin, the next two centuries flew past. He learned the powers of the Dhampire and he learned the powers of the Houngan. In 2023 his mentor Clarretta departed for parts unknown and he was alone for the first time in his unnatural life.
Rolin met Vincent Moore a few years later when he was hired to provide magical security for the growing More Electronics company. Twenty years passed while the two worked together, building the company. Rolin noticed the changes in Vincent in the late 2030’s and he knew without a doubt that Vincent was adept in the darkest of magical arts. When Vincent killed his wife, Rolin knew that Vincent had crossed into a darker side of himself. Killing a woman, was not at all a problem for Rolin, who had killed tens of thousands of times in his life. Raising demons was nothing to a man that raised the dead to serve him. When he spoke to his old friend about his actions however, Vincent denied having anything to do with the accident. Vincent denied knowing anything about demons or magic. Vincent denied everything.
Rolin was taken aback at his friend’s secrecy but felt that perhaps Vincent was not ready to become himself yet, though he feared that at his age he may not live long enough to become his true self. Surprisingly Vincent asked Rolin to fly to one of his stores in Florida, but not suspecting anything, he agreed. Shortly after the plane left the ground in Seattle, the wing of the plane sheared off, causing an emergency landing and crash in one of the roughest neighborhoods of Seattle. Rolin knew at once that it was caused by Vincent, and he began to plot, to build his empire and to grow in strength. He allowed Vincent to believe that he was dead, he even edged at Vincent’s mind in his sleep to encourage him to forget.
